Helping Your Anxiety With Exercise The result of worrying about the next panic attack or feeling anxious and stressed al the time is tightness in the shoulders and neck. These physical results increase stress and make you even more anxious, keeping the cycle of anxiety alive. Three things happen when you start exercising consistently: endorphins are released which contribute to a sense of happiness and well being, your mind releases stress, and your muscles release tension. Doctors and therapists use exercise as a prescription for anxiety and panic disorders, but there is one problem. Many patients with these disorders fear having an attack while out of the home or grow more anxious when they go to a gym or out for a walk. This makes it difficult to start exercising to see the benefits. There is no question that you will feel better when you start exercising, so take a few tips on how to get started without additional stress: Take it Slow Start out slow with goals you know you can accomplish. For instance, you know that setting a goal to run a marathon in three months is not going to really happen, so don't set it. If your goals are unreachable you will set yourself up for failure and end up right back where you are today. Make goals that you know you can accomplish. This may be just a simple walk around the block or five minutes on a treadmill. If that is your starting point accept and embrace it. You will find yourself moving beyond that point and doing better as you start to feel better. Make it a Challenge Your body and mind should always be challenged at least a little during your workouts. When your starting goal is too easy you are ready to move up the intensity of the workout or the length of time you workout. You should consistently be moving one or the other up to keep your body stimulated. If you can do your workout without sweating it's time to make things a bit harder. Eventually, you want to be doing at least a half hour of intense exercise that challenges your mind and body. Relaxing the Mind Relieving anxiety and panic comes with releasing the body of tension and the mind of worry and stress. Exercises like Pilates, yoga, and tai chi can help tremendously with this if you perform them at least a few times every week. If you can incorporate this type of exercise into your daily life you will be calmer during your daily life and will be better able to handle stress without getting anxious. Don't feel bad if you can't handle much exercise from the start. With consistent practice you will improve more and more. When you are exercising almost daily out of natural habit and it becomes your lifestyle you will start to see big improvements in your physical body and the condition of your mind. |
